Golden Dawn’s food handout campaign to “Greeks only” crushed the blockage of Athens Municipality

25.07.2013
Golden Dawn’s campaign, planned for yesterday (24 July), to distribute food to “Greeks only” has been banned by Athens Municipality. According to Greek daily Ekathimerini, Athens Mayor Yorgo Kaminis released that the municipality does not permit Golden Dawn to proceed with the food dis-tribution planned at 6:00 hours in the evening and justified the decision as the campaign consciously promotes racism and xenophobia.

Police blocked the avenues to Attiki Square, Golden Dawn had to handout food in front of the party headquarters

Golden Dawn had previously released the food handout would be legal and the authorities had been informed on the event which was to take place on Wednesday. According to the press release Golden Dawn Party President Nikos Michaloliakos and party’s all deputies were expected to partici-pate at the event.

According to Ekathimerini, Athens Mayor Kamini asked for the cooperation of Public Order Minis-ter Nikos Dendias for not allowing the campaign to take place at the Attiki Square and Kamini received the agreement of Dendias that the police forces will not let the discriminative food handout happen in the main square of the city.

Yesterday midday, police blocked organization of all public gatherings from Wednesday noon till midnight at the Attiki Square, which was previously thought by Golden Dawn as the venue of the food distribution with special target as “Greeks only”. With mobile police forces on duty at different spots of the city, Athens Municipality closed all squares the party members were likely to gather. Upon this, Golden Dawn had to proceed with the food distribution in front of the party headquar-ters. Back in May 2013, Athens Municipality had again blocked Golden Dawn from realizing a similar campaign accompanied with food distribution at Syntagma Square and Golden Dawn had to do the handout in front of the party headquarters.

Following the blockage of the food handout at the anniversary of the fall of the dicta regime in 1974 and restoration of the democracy in Greece, the Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis gave a speech to Mega TV and expressed his serious concerns as Golden Dawn being a threat to destabilization and division of the country.
