EU-Commission supports FUEN-Network for multilingualism and linguistic diversity

19.11.2008
The network for language promotion, which was prepared together by FUEN and the European Academy in Bolzano (EURAC) under the direction of Susann Schenk and Dr. Andrea Abel and submitted for a grant at the EU, will be supported by the EU with almost half a million Euro.
As FUEN director Jan Diedrichsen communicated, the promotion of minority languages in the context of European multilingualism is the centre piece of the network. Especially the potential that exists in regions with minority languages must be used better in a European context – and the minorities must be enabled to use this potential effectively.

Other members in the consortium that will be subsidised are the German-speaking Community in Belgium, the Højskolen Østersøen from Denmark, the Carinthian Slovenes in Austria and the Youth of European Nationalities (YEN). The member organisations of FUEN and YEN will also be involved.

The co-financing necessary for the network was already promised by the province of South Tyrol, Italy in January 2008.
FUEN-vice-president Martha Stocker, who was strongly involved in the preparation of the network, is very pleased: “With the network FUEN can attain its goal, to support in particular the small and smallest languages in an effective and noticeable way.”
